Quality Director Major Projects - Balfour Beatty
Amanda McKay is an Out Trans Woman who came out to the world at the age of 49, working for Balfour Beatty the International Construction and Infrastructure contractor as Quality Director for the Major Projects division. Her key areas of expertise are Nuclear construction, tunnelling and marine works. Amanda has over 30 years of experience working in Quality, Health and safety on major projects in the energy, oil and gas, and nuclear sectors, starting her career in mining and tunnelling.
As an out Bi Trans Woman and the most senior LGBT+ employee within Balfour Beatty, Amanda actively supports the LGBT+ community and works to demonstrate that Balfour Beatty is a diverse, inclusive and accepting employer. She is a Co-chair of the Women’s network and Scottish Co Chair for the LGBT+ & Allies network, and promotes both through public speaking, facilitating events and workshops, contributing to internal media and acting as support and mentor to members of LGBT+ staff. She is part of the team who developed the initial Balfour Beatty group equality, diversity and inclusion strategy, developed their internal Transgender guidance document, and coached HR business partners in working with the trans community. She regularly supports external organisations in their approaches to LGBT+ policy and employees working with the Balfour Beatty supply chain and clients to help establish their own approaches to LGBT+ this has included Highways England, HS2, Sellafield, Rolls Royce, Skanska and Police Scotland. Amanda was a trustee and Board member for LGBT+ Health and Wellbeing in Scotland, and a mentor with the Transition Support service. She is the Scottish lead for the National Trans Police Association and works closely with Police Scotland and the Gay Police association to support LGBT+ in policing. She is passionate about promoting STEM and engineering careers, she works with youth groups and colleges in the North west and Scotland including the mentoring two school groups for engineering competitions and events such as the Lego Challenge.
Amanda is Board member and Trustee for the Chartered Quality Institute, and works on the development of the Quality profession she has developed a competence model for Quality professional in the Nuclear sector and was part of the team which has developed trailblazer apprenticeships for Quality trainees in the Nuclear sector. In addition she regularly speaks at events representing the CQI on Equality and Diversity, particularly LGBT+ inclusion within the profession.
Amanda has always been a very active volunteer throughout Adult life and whilst this is now very much focused on LGBT and mental health, she spent 15 years as a Territorial Army officer, completing full time reserve service in Northern Ireland, first Gulf war and Bosnia, on leaving the TA she became a Special Constable serving 22 years with both North Yorkshire and Cumbria, in both forces she attained the rank of Chief Officer and spent time on workforce modernisation and the changes to the training and deployment of Police volunteer and Special Constables Amanda has many interests outside of work including building dolls houses, model making, exploring the highlands of Scotland and working as a volunteer at the Tank Museum at Bovington restoring military vehicles and exhibits.
