Sean leads the Institute for Sustainable Construction, the CIAT Centre of Excellence in Architectural Technology and is Professor of Construction Innovation at Edinburgh Napier University. The Institute hosts research centres involving offsite construction, low energy housing, renewables, timber based construction systems and smart cities. He has led projects for new build and retrofit housing with over 30 countries and worked extensively with the UK new build housing sector, including the development of robust details. In 2012-13 he led the Scottish universities partnership to establish with industry the Construction Scotland Innovation Centre. In 2015 the university was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for the positive impact of their work for the construction industry and in 2016 he was awarded honorary fellowship of the RIAS due to the impact of his work towards sustainable construction. Sean currently leads the housing, construction and infrastructure skills gateway proposal linked to the £1.3 billion Edinburgh & South East City Region Deal to be funded by both UK and Scottish governments. He currently chairs the Scottish Government working group for new housing construction skills working in partnership with Homes for Scotland and others to provide recommendations to the government for short, medium and longer term skills needs for the sector.
